Access to the Collections

Access and Use Policies and Procedures

The Art Museum University of Toronto welcomes and encourages students and scholars to research and study its Collections, balanced with our duty of care and preservation of the Collections for future generations. We make every effort to accommodate research and access, however, access to some materials may be restricted due to several factors including but not limited to condition, fragility, and sacred nature. We will also make every effort to fulfill image reproduction requests.

Art in the House

Works from the Hart House Collection have been publicly displayed in the House since the collection was established in 1922. Historically, the walls of Hart House were hung with works by notable Group of Seven painters such as Lawren Harris, A.Y. Jackson, and J.E.H. MacDonald.

Today, Hart House displays projects by contemporary Canadian artists including Luis Jacob, Ian Carr-Harris, Lynne Cohen, Carl Beam, and Shelly Niro. For a self-guided tour map of the artworks currently installed in Hart House, please click here:

Art on Campus

The Art on Campus program, administered by the Art Museum, coordinates the lending of artwork from the University of Toronto Collection to departments, units, and faculties across the downtown campus.

While the Art Museum endeavors to have as many works as possible installed on campus, we are also mindful that we are responsible for the care and longevity of these artworks. The Art Museum Collections staff works closely with the Borrower to find works that satisfy the requirements of the site and the tastes of the Borrower.

How does the Art on Campus Program work?

  • Requests to borrow artwork from the University of Toronto Art Collection for campus display are submitted in writing to the Art Museum using the fillable Application for New Art form.
  • Upon receipt and approval of the Application, The Art Museum will advise you of your position on the Waiting List and arranges a site visit to determine suitability of the space.
  • Borrowers browse the Art on Campus Program Image Bank to view artworks currently available.
  • Works of art selections are finalized by the Art Museum and the Borrower.
  • The artworks are prepared and installed by professional art handlers contracted by the Art Museum, ensuring that the works are covered by the University of Toronto’s Fine Arts Policy while they are on loan.
  • The Borrower and the Art Museum complete the Art on Campus Loan Agreement.
  • If the art in your area needs to be moved due to renovations or a staff move please send a completed Art Move Request Form to the Art Museum at least two weeks before the renovation/move. The Art Museum Collections Manager will arrange for professional art handlers to move the artwork.
