Anishinaabekwe (ojibway woman)

In my practice I reflect on identity through tradition, history, and culture. As an Anishinaabekwe (Ojibway woman) I negotiate my western upbringing and education with Indigenous traditions of oral and practice-based learning. This work is my exploration of beading as a traditional cultural craft and my feelings of being an urban Indigenous woman. As a bra with nipples, it changes the perception of an object meant to conceal my sexualized body. Standing proud within my own body I am confronting the viewer with my presence as an Indigenous woman and a body that is objectified through perception.

The Art Museum’s galleries are temporarily closed for installation. Join us on February 25 for the opening reception of our new exhibitions.
