This exhibition of nearly 130 Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood works from the Dennis Lanigan collection is supplemented by works from the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, and private Toronto collections. The so-called PRB admired the purity and simplicity of art from the early Italian Renaissance, that is before Raphael, thus giving the title to their group.
The exhibition gives a sense of the distinctive style, and the literary and classical themes favoured by the PRB. Dr. Dennis Lanigan’s “Collector’s Acknowledgement” in the catalogue for A Dream of the Past tells the story of how his collection was formed, and his descriptions of each work are lively and detailed. The selection covers chiefly the second phase of Pre-Raphaelitism, which along with Aesthetic and Academic Classicism made up the Aesthetic Movement.
