Toronto-based painter James Lahey has become known nationally in recent years for his large-scale works in several modes that he works on concurrently. These include shore scenes, cloud paintings, hyper-realist flowers, and complete abstractions. This exhibition – in large measure a reprise of one mounted by the MacLaren Art Centre in Barrie last year – includes one painting of clouds, and eight abstractions, called Index paintings. A handsome, full-colour catalogue, with essays by internationally recognized curator and writer Ihor Holubizky, and University of Toronto professor Mark Kingwell accompanies the exhibition.
