Tony Scherman: Works On Paper
February 22–April 16, 2005
—
University of Toronto Art Centre
This exhibition showcases a gift of twenty-six works on paper by Toronto artist Tony Scherman that he kindly donated to the University of Toronto’s art collection in 2004. The works range in date between the mid-nineties and 2003, and are drawn from various series of his work, including his About 1789 (which concerns the French Revolution and Napoleon), The Blue Highway (exploring faces of celebrities of the twentieth century whose images were over-photographed) and his most recent series, entitled the Seduction of Oedipus.
The artist has utilized a wide range of media in creating these works, and explores an intriguing repertoire of images: dogs, flowers, luscious desserts, and fragments or complete images of the human face and figure.
