A co-presentation of the University of Toronto Art Centre and the Latin American Studies Department, University of Toronto
This show is among the first North American exhibitions to focus exclusively on the visual tradition of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru, (present day Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Panama and parts of Argentina and Chile). The characters and stories in the exhibition’s fifty-five paintings are enduring evidence of how one religion, Catholicism, was lived and experienced by the many peoples of South America from the 17th to the 19th century.
