Delivered by Dr. Anthony Shelton, Exhibition Curator and Director of the UBC Museum of Anthropology
This lecture will focus on the power of materials to evoke world views, which legitimate the power of their owners and the political hierarchies on which they were dependent. Similarities and differences will be described between the way rare natural materials were conceived in pre-Hispanic Mexico and Peru and how these were reconceptualised after the Spanish conquest.
