Spanning over five decades, the exhibition P. Mansaram: The Medium is the Medium is the Medium thinks through the artist’s decades-long practice of repetition. Utilizing a wide variety of media, including drawing, painting, print, photocopying, sculpture and film, P. Mansaram uses recurrence of symbols, texts and characters to evoke feelings of infinity, and of travel through the dimensions of time and territory. The way in which he assembles different media and creates a sense of place represents a nuanced narrative of the diasporic experience.
P. Mansaram was born in 1934 in Mount Abu, Rajasthan, India where he attended the Sir J.J. School of Art. In 1966, after studying at the Rijks Academie in Amsterdam, he migrated to Canada, befriending, among others, Marshall McLuhan. In 2016, the Royal Ontario Museum acquired over 700 works from the artist’s archive.
